Bari Weiss failing up
Bari Weis is a self identified proud Zionist1. She came to prominence over two decades ago when, in 2004 she attempted to silence Anti-Zionist professors at Columbia University, obviously prioritizing Zionism over free speech there.2
She's come back to the cause in a big way since the 7th of October 2023. For example in August 2025 her media platform "The Free Press" attempted to claim in an absurd article that Palestinians weren't actually starving to death because of a horrific total blockade imposed on the Strip since the 2nd of March of that year by Israel as some of the children who died, had pre-existing conditions.3
The acclaimed Palestinian Poet and Professor of English, Refaat Al-Areer, also directly blamed her and others like her for putting him and his family in danger because of her online incitement against him at the end of October 2023 for mocking obvious atrocity propaganda on twitter4. He was martyred along with many others of his family in an Israeli airstrike on a residential building just a few weeks later in early December5. So another feather in her cap I suppose.
Overall though since she's been active, support for Zionism in the US has plummeted across the board including in the Jewish community67. So it may be surprising how she keeps on failing upwards, most recently being named editor in chief of CBS news in October 20258. Or maybe not considering David Ellison has been in charge of CBS since September 20259. He's the son of Larry Ellison who signed a deal to acquire social media giant Tiktok in December 202510. These billionaires are, to put it mildly, pro-Israel11
So what, exactly does Weiss wish to do with one of the largest sources of news for the American people. She said it outright in a conversation at the Jewish Leadership conference on the 16th of November where she explicitly said she wants to redraw the lines of acceptable debate and acceptable American politics and culture12.
The only question now is do Americans really want someone like Bari Weiss, who has for decades placed Zionism and the repetition of Israeli talking points as a higher priority than truth, deciding the bounds of acceptable ideas in the United States of America. Do they really want the Ellisons manipulating their social media algorithms? And if not, what will they do about it? Because if they do nothing American democracy will die under the boots of the autocrats controlling their sources of information.
